James Madison School is slated to open in September 2018.

"It's been a long journey, but finally we're coming to our destination," Garfield Supt. of Schools Nicholas Perrapato said.

The 53,000-square-foot facility will have 13 classrooms, four group instruction rooms and two self-contained classrooms for special needs students.

It also has a cafeteria, computer facility, auditorium and media center, according to New Jersey Schools Development Authority Chief Executive Officer Charles McKenna.

Approximately 275 K-5 students are expected to attend, McKenna said.

"The children will be attending a state-of-the-art school," he said.

"[It's] going to provide an education environment where children can achieve to their maximum abilities."

"Our children really, really needed another school," Garfield Mayor Tana Raymond said.

The school is being built on the former site of The Most Holy Name School on Passaic Avenue between Marsellus and Lincoln places.

This is the third SDA-funded building in the city after the middle school and a early childhood developmental center, McKenna said.
